Special Guest at Coin Toss

December 9, 2024 by Tommy Brow

The five ANEFO Officials, Kurt Sinclair, Jay Johnson, Criag McDonnell, Rich Harringtion, and Matt Hooton, who worked the Thanksgiving Eve Football game between Malden Catholic High School and St. Johns of Shrewsbury were delighted to find a very special guest during the coin toss.  Helping the referee with the coin toss was Archbishop Richard Henning, the new leader of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston who recently replaced Cardinal Sean O’Malley who retired in August.

Archbishop Henning spent the last year as the bishop of Providence, Rhode Island. Before that, he served as an auxiliary bishop on Long Island, New York.  Henning said since coming to Boston, he gets asked one question more than any other: “Have you ever been, are you now, or will you ever be a Red Sox fan?” he said.  He didn’t directly answer the question, saying it’s more important people know his beliefs on religion.  One thing is for sure, he was a big fan of all the players in the Thanksgiving Eve Football game in Malden.

With regards to the outcome of the game, Malden Catholic defeated St Johns of Shrewsbury by a score of 30-7.  Thank you Archbishop Henning!
