Scott Young, ANEFO official; and Tommy Brow, Rules Interpreter, were the featured guest speakers at the ANEFO meeting on September 19, 2016. The topic of the evening was determining how a team scores points. In addition, Joe Lucido, ANEFO official, submitted a handout on Rule 5 – Series of Downs. Their handouts, summary of their presentations, and/or resources are located at the bottom of this article.
First, Scott Young discussed the value of scores, touchdowns, touchdown plays, the try, approved rulings, fouls during a try, field goals, field goal plays, a two point safety, plays to think about, imparting new impetus, and a couple of thoughts about the game of football. Next, Tommy Brow discussed breaking the goal line plane, what is and what is not a touchdown, airborne players near the goal line, field goal attempts, battered balls in the end zone, and a few “You Make the Call Plays.” Joe Lucido also submitted a handout for this meeting that included information about series of downs, when to award a first down, the line to gain, forward progress, broken continuity of downs, down and possession after a penalty, fouls before and/or after a change of possession, fouls between downs, fouls by both teams, and when it is too late for the officials to change a decision of the field.
