Rule 4 – Live and Dead Balls – October 24, 2016

October 25, 2016 by Tommy Brow

timeoutChet Jackson, ANEFO official; and Tommy Brow, Rules Interpreter, were the featured guest speakers at the ANEFO meeting on October 24, 2016. The topics of the evening were live ball, dead ball, ball out of bounds and substitution infractions. Their handouts, summary of their presentations, and/or resources are located at the bottom of this article.

First, Chet discussed the dead ball becoming alive, live ball becoming dead, an inadvertent whistle, play situations involving an inadvertent whistle, delay of game, player out of bounds, held ball out of bounds, loose ball out of bounds, and a ball crossing a boundary line.

Later, Tommy share a video clip of an illegal block below the waist by a guard in a recent college game.  Brow also discussed breaking the offensive huddle with twelve players, leaving by the wrong side of the field, not entering the field from the team area, substitutes entering defensive huddles and formations, substitutes and the nine-yard mark, and several interesting “You Make the Call” plays. The match-ups for this week’s North and South MIAA Tournament Games were also revealed. For more information, please see posted handouts below.
