President Al Bartolini, presided at the ninth ANEFO meeting of the 2022 Football Season on Monday, October 24, 2022, at the Irish-American Club in Malden. Al greeted the members and discussed various updates about the football season. The handouts or resources from the meeting can be found online in “ANNOUNCEMENT” and “RULES” tab of our website: www.anefo.org. Select “Loss of Down Situations – October 24, 2022”.
Tim Hooton, Middlesex League Commissioner and MIAA Tournament Assigner, was the first guest speaker. Tim discussed the upcoming MIAA Tournament format and how important is was for officials to have previously registered with the MIAA. Tim also discussed how the top sixteen teams in each division get selected based on a formula involving school rank, win and losses, average margin, opponent’s ranking and the aggregate rating. Tim explained who would be assigning the earlier games in the tournament and who would be assigning the later games in the tournament.
Tom Brow, Rules Interpreter, was the second guest speaker. Tom presented a visual presentation that included loss of down situations, a “Hail Mary” pass play and an illegal forward pass, a trick pass play, and a receiver getting bumped out-of-bounds then making a catch. Tom also presented and discussed four Hudl football play clips from recent local games.

At the end of the meeting, there was an opportunity for ANEFO members to ask some excellent questions. There is no meeting next week due to Halloween. The next meeting will be the ANEFO Business Meeting on Monday, November 7, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. at the Irish-American Club. I wish everyone another successful weekend of football officiating.
