Mike Roccia, featured guest speaker, and Tommy Brow, Rules Interpreter, discussed Five-Man technique and the new 2015 rule changes at the ANEFO meeting on August 31, 2015. Their handouts and/or resources are located at the bottom of this article. First, Tommy Brow discussed the new rule changes including: illegal overbuilt facemask, leaving the game due to illegal equipment, pre-game warm-ups, changing the play clock when the wrong ball is in the game, helmet coming off, pushing and pulling an opponent off the pile, sideline interference, number of officials permitted on the field, and on-side kicks. Three interesting “You Make the Call” players were also presented. Next, Mike Roccia discussed basic NCAA philosophies, positioning, techniques, and five-man crew mechanics. His presentation included: the ‘musts’ for all officials, basic scrimmage play techniques and mechanics, scrimmage play and blocking philosophies, goal line positioning, forward pass mechanics, pass interference philosophies, pass and punt situations, field goals and the extra point, measurements, and timeouts.
