Kickoff Procedure
Michael A. Roccia, Interpreter
Association of N.E. Football Officials
Officials’ Technique/Procedure for Kickoffs & Kicks After Safeties -
“The Domino Effect”
The Referee, standing on the numbers at approximately the receiving team’s 10-yard line, will “punch” his fist toward the Back Judge to confirm that the receiving team has 11 players. (Back Judge will “punch” back in agreement.)
Both the Referee and the Back Judge will then immediately “punch their fists toward the upfield wing officials on their sidelines who will raise their hands to signal their readiness.
The Umpire, after seeing the wing officials raise their hands, then hands the ball to the kicker and raises his hand in readiness.
The Referee then blows his whistle and the 25 second count begins.
The ball must be kicked before 25 seconds have elapsed or there will be a 5-yard delay of game penalty.
This same procedure will also be used on a free kick after a safety. (Yard line of Referee is adjusted.)
